We need a course in charity law
Whether we want to be able to effectively fulfill our professional duty as lawyers in the community or reach clients in Canada's second largest economic sector, we could all benefit from a course in charity law, yet only three faculties across Canada offer one.

What we're proposing...
This course would introduce students to the laws that govern Canada's voluntary organizations, such as charities, non-profits, and hybrid social enterprise entities. It would therefore be a combination of trust, tax, administrative, and corporate law. It would introduce students to this body of law in a way that prepares them to serve these entities professionally and as volunteers.
Topics would include:
1. Major differences between organizational forms
2. Obtaining and maintaining status
3. Tax treatment and governance rules
4. Political, business, and foreign activities
5. Canada in comparison
6. History and future of the sector
See here for a sample syllabus developed by students.
